A MONUMENTAL ENGRAVED AND CHASED SILVER ALLOY TRAY WITH STAR-SHAPED RIM
Sumatra, Indonesia, South East Asia, dated 1235 AH (1819 AD)

Of typical circular shape, resting on a flat base, with gently curved and ribbed cavetto, and an everted, star-shaped rim, the interior engraved with a central roundel in-filled with a calligraphic inscription in Jawi script with Arabic alphabet and numerals, the style of the script reminiscent of West Sumatran creations by Minangkabau people, and concentric circles with typical Malay silver alloys motifs like scrolling vines, chequered backgrounds, starry beadings, and lush foliage.

داتوك افغ! ليما كادنغ كوتو نن توجو. لوحق تانه داتر سنة ١٢٣٥

Datuk Afgha (?), Lima Kadangh Kutu Nan Tujuah. Luhaq Tanah Datar, sanat 1235 (AH)

Datuk Afgha (possibly the name of the owner, datuk being an honorific title usually given to elder chiefs), in Lima Gadang (the name of an area in West Sumatra), Koto Nan Tujuah (village name), and the clan name Luhak Tanah Datar, typical of the Minangkabau people in Western Sumatra, the year 1235 AH.
