Provenance: an English private collection, purchased from Etheral Auctioneers, Taiwan, July 6th 2024, lot 344, previously in a private Japanese collection.
The motif of Yiyu first appeared in Hebei province during the Sui Dynasty, becoming more popular the Tang Dynasty. By the late Tang and Five Dynasties it was more of common feature among funerary goods to appear in high-rank tombs, where they served as guardians into the afterlife.
