A SMALL QAJAR LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ PEN CASE (QALAMDAN) WITH GOL O BOLBOL MOTIF
Iran, dated 1267 AH (1850 AD)
With rounded ends and sliding tray, polychrome-painted, heightened with gold, and lacquered, the top decorated with the recurrent Qajar literary topos of the rose and the nightingale (gol o bolbol), with a row of large rose stems and birds perched amongst their branches, the sides with floral festoons with moths and a double pair of Mandarin ducks on the rounded ends, the underside and interior with a gilt vine scrollwork with grape bunches against red ground, the date 1267 AH inscribed in black ink inside a cusped gilt cartouche on the outer edge of the underside.
