A BRONZE FIGURINE OF THE ENTHRONED DIVINE HINDU COUPLE OF VISHNU AND LAKSHMI
Tamil Nadu, Southern India, 18th century
Cast in the round, featuring the beloved Hindu couple of the God of Preservation, Vishnu, and his consort, Lakshmi, the Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity, Vishnu seated on a lotus pedestal in lalitasana pose with his left leg bent and the right stretched outward, Lakshmi seated on Vishnu's lap, holding a lotus (padma), one of her typical attributes, Vishnu holding a flaming conch shell and quoit (sudarshan chakra), two attributes typically associated with this deity, one hand around his consort's waist and the latter in a 'Fear Not' (abhaya) gesture, both wearing tall conical headdresses typical of Tamil Nadu bronzes and heavily adorned with necklaces, earrings and belts.
