AN ILLUMINATED CALLIGRAPHER’S DIPLOMA OF COMPETENCY (IJAZAH)
Ottoman Turkey, dated 1298 AH (1881 AD)

Arabic manuscript on paper, opening with a large single line of black ink thuluth script referring to a well-known passage in the Kitab al-Jihad wa'l-Siyar (The Book of Jihad and Expedition) by 'Ali Ibn Tahir al-Sulami (d. 1106), followed by 3ll. beneath in black ink naskh script, the bottom two rectangular cartouches respectively in riqa' and naskh scripts providing the details of the ijazah referring to several different mujiz (certifiers, teachers of calligraphy), the text clustered in cloudbands set against a burnished gold ground, dated on the lower left corner, the diploma laid on a double cardboard page, in a white cardboard mount.
