A CRIMSON RED SILK VELVET AND METAL THREAD BROCADE PANEL
Possibly Florence or Genoa, Renaissance Italy, mid-16th century
Of rectangular shape, woven in a directional vertical format, with two fragmentary widths joined in the middle, the central ground pile-on-pile cut, voided and brocaded with crimson red silk velvet and metal thread wound around a sand-coloured silk core, decorated with a grand design of ogival, interlocking vegetal trellis issuing carnations and encasing large medallions with stylised flowers with rounded bodies and serrated petals, often referred to as 'artichokes', the connecting points with vegetal volutes, the design following the gusto of the Ottoman court and Turkish velvet çatma panels, mounted, glazed and framed.
