A NORTH AFRICAN YATAGAN SWORD WITH NIELLO AND SILVER HILT
Algeria, North Africa, ca. 1780 - 1830

With a wide, curved, single-edged steel blade, engraved just below the forte with an epigraphic cartouche surrounded by stylised vegetal sprays and six-pointed star roundels, and stamped with an undeciphered blacksmith's mark, the forte and hilt covered in silver sheet inlaid with niello decoration comprising five star roundels interspersed amidst double palmettes on each side of the hilt, stylised rosettes and vegetal meanders on the hilt's head, underside and forte, a single line Arabic inscription on the spine, the brown leather-lined wooden scabbard decorated with repoussé silver mounts following the European-inspired Rococo fashion current in the Ottoman court in the 19th century.
