A KALIGHAT PAINTING OF THE TARAKESHWAR AFFAIR: ELOKESHI VISITING HER LOVER, THE BRAHMIN HEAD PRIEST (MAHANT)

Opaque pigments and white wash on stained, wove paper, the large vertical composition depicting a recurrent motif in 20th-century Kalighat painting often referred to the Tarakeshwar affair or the Elokeshi-Mahant scandal, with Elokeshi, the wife of a government employee called Nobin Chandra, in her blue saree visiting the Taraknath temple in Tarakeshwar and bringing offers, standing in front of the temple's mahant (head priest), behind the two lovers a man with a tall bottle, and ladies gossiping, the shrine in the background dedicated to the worship of the Hindu God Shiva and bearing his symbols (a trident at the top of the dome, and a crescent moon in the central niche), laid on an off-white cardboard mount.
