A POLYCHROME-PAINTED, GILT AND LACQUERED PAPIER-MÂCHÉ TRIPOD SIDE TABLE WITH DIVS AND COURTLY COUPLES
Possibly Srinagar, Kashmir, Northern India, second half 19th century
The wooden side table polychrome-painted, gilt, and lacquered, supported by three slender, sloping legs ending in upward-turned feet enhanced with drop-shaped, curled leaves, the coiled stem fitted between two rounded bell-shaped elements, rising to a distinctive trefoil-shaped tabletop, the decorative repertoire typical of 19th and early 20th-century Kashmiri lacquered furniture featuring dense floral triumphs, rosette scrolls, interlocking vegetal meanderings livened by small birds, vine trellis and on the top, four panels with banquet and entertainment scenes, two at the court of divs with demonic attendants and mythical animals, and the latter two at an Indian princely court with female attendants, dancers and angels.
