AN INLAID AND FOILED PARCEL-GILT SILVER STEEL SADDLE AXE (TABARZIN)
Possibly Punjab or Kutch, Northern India, first half 19th century
Of typical shape, with a long cylindrical shaft ending in a bulbous pommel, the head with a steel blade with a crescentic cutting edge and square peen on the reverse, the shaft, the peen, and both sides of the axe head inlaid and decorated with parcel-gilt silver foil engraved with a dense interlace of blossoming rosettes and foliage on a ring-punched ground.
