Born in 1875 in Damascus, Tawfik Tarek’s objective was to establish a historical balance by appropriating and subverting Orientalist techniques, thereby highlighting the often-overlooked aspects of history. In addition to his artistic endeavors, Tarek had a keen interest in architecture. He contributed to the restoration of historical sites, including the Umayyad Mosque in Damascus, where he restored an important mosaic. His independent works, while rooted in the traditional Orientalist style, were characterized by their high level of detail and informative presentation. Throughout his life, he chose not to sell his artworks, even in the face of financial hardship.
