KHALED HOURANI (PALESTINIAN, B. 1965)
Untitled (Diptych)

Signed in Arabic, signed and dated 'K. Hourani, 2014' on lower right
Acrylic on Canvas
97.5cm x 80cm (2) (total including frame)

Khaled Hourani is one of the most influential Palestinian artists and curators working today. Born in Hebron, Palestine in 1965, he has held roles such as the General Director of the Fine Arts Department of the Palestinian Ministry of Culture, and director (as well as co-founder) of the International Academy of Art Palestine. His artworks have been extensively exhibited internationally, across a range of media, and often comment on the surreal and painful reality of the political hardships his homeland faces. Hourani's painted works of this type, utilising the iconography of the zebra, respond to the well-known incident at Gaza Zoo - where lacking unusual animals, the staff creatively transformed their donkeys’ fur with dye. This represents but one of the ways Hourani is able to subtly capture both the struggles and creative ingenuity of the Palestinian people in his work.
