A MULTI-COLOURED LAMPWORK GLASS BEAD NECKLACE
Possibly India, mid to late 20th century
The bright vibrant necklace made from several clear coloured glass beads produced with the "lampwork" or "flameworking" technique, introduced in India post-1938, each bead featuring on the exterior protruding rounded bosses in white, orange, green, yellow, light and dark blue, strung together on an off-white coarse cotton cord.
31.5cm long
Lampwork, also known as flameworking, is a method where glass is melted using a torch or lamp, and then shaped using tools and hand movements. India, especially Varanasi (Benares), is known for its production of glass beads, including those made using the lampwork technique, similar in design and colour palette to the present example.
