Born in Beirut, Lebanon, in 1928, Aref El-Rayess was a self-taught Lebanese painter and sculptor that achieved international renown in his lifetime, receiving commissions from both the Lebanese and Saudi Arabian government. Having spent several years between Senegal and Paris, as well as Florence and Rome, El-Rayess was not short of artistic resources to draw from in his richly varied oeuvre.
When he returned to Lebanon to Lebanon in 1963, he taught fine arts at the Lebanese University and served as the president of the Lebanese Association of Painters and Sculptors.
