A GROUP OF NINE JAPANESE NETSUKE

Edo period, 19th century

Comprising: a wood netsuke of a reclining buffalo, an amber netsuke formed as a shell, a wood netsuke in shape of a mokugyo drum coated with cinnabar lacquer, a lacquered wood netsuke in form of a tsuzumi drum, a lacquered wood toggle carved as smiling figure tying a scarf around their head, three manju netsuke, the first in reticulated metal, the second decorated with cinnabar lacquer, the third with gilt lacquer peony painted against a polished wood body, and a modern wood netsuke of a frog posed as a sumo wrestler on a lotus pod signed Noboru.

Provenance: the Claudio Perino Collection, Turin, acquired mostly in Japan in early 2000s.
