Ink and white wash on paper, the small-sized preparatory sketch depicting a distinguished bearded man of South Asian descent, wearing a multi-folded turban reminiscent of Sikh dastar turbans with the characteristic arrow-like opening on the forehead, with a well-groomed beard and thick moustache, the roughly sketched shoulders covered by a shawl with many pleats, on the upper right corner a later-added sepia ink inscription reading Barkat Ali Khan, on the left two inscriptions reading Rs.1, set on a cardboard mount.

The sketch 7.6cm x 8.4cm, 18.6cm x 19cm including the mount
