A CHINESE PORCELAIN TUREEN FOR THE OTTOMAN MARKET
Jingdezhen, China, Qianlong period, 18th century
This tureen features oblong cartouches adorned with Qur'anic inscriptions in gold, set within red and green borders against a rich cobalt blue glaze. The surface is embellished with gilt crescent moons and stars, and additional Qur'anic inscriptions in gold can be found around the rims and inside the dish. The knop and interior of the lid are decorated with a gold chrysanthemum spray, while both the foot and lid are bordered with floral patterns.
Similar tureens are documented as part of a renowned service produced at the Jingdezhen porcelain factories in the second half of the 18th century. A substantial number of surviving pieces from this service are held in the Topkapi Palace, Istanbul, which includes two tureens with matching stands, forty-two bowls, fifty-three covers, and seven cups. Additional tureens from the same service can be found in the Musée Guimet, Paris, and the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire, Brussels.
