NABIL ANANI (PALESTINIAN, B. 1943)
Untitled
Dated '2014' and signed in Arabic on lower right
Acrylic on canvas
93.5cm x 93cm total (including frame)
Born in Latroun, Palestine in 1943, Nabil Anani is a key founder of the modern Palestinian art movement. Anani graduated in Fine Art from Alexandria University, Egypt in 1969. Upon his return to Palestine he began a career as an artist, teacher and trainer at the UN college in Ramallah. Anani's artistic practice is multi-disciplinary: he has worked as a writer, painter, ceramist and sculptor, often using medias such as leather, henna, wood, papier-maché, copper and natural dyes in his unique works. This connection to raw materials is linked to his role as one of the four members of the New Visions artistic collective, alongside fellow Palestinian artists Sliman Mansour, Tayseer Barakat and Vera Tamari. This initiative, established during the First Intifada (1987-1993), aimed to boycott Israeli supplies, and instead promote the use of Palestinian materials such as coffee, hay, mud, and henna. In 1988, Anani was appointed as the head of the League of the Palestinian Artists, playing a key role in the establishment of the first International Academy of Fine Art in Palestine. Anani has become highly decorated for his work - in 1997 he was awarded the first Palestinian National Prize for Visual Art by Yasser Arafat, and in 2006 he received the prestigious King Abdullah II Award for Creativity.
Nabil Anani resides and works in Ramallah, Palestine.
