A MAMLUK REVIVAL DAMASCUS-WARE SILVER-INLAID BRASS TRAY WITH THE SACRIFICE OF ISAAC
Ottoman Syria, early 20th century

Of shallow circular shape, with a narrow cavetto and a wide flattened rim with reinforced edge, the central field inlaid with an engraved silver medallion featuring the biblical story of the Sacrifice of Isaac, where Abraham's faith is tested by God (Genesis 22), commanding him to sacrifice his son, Isaac, as a burnt offering on Mount Moriah, the scene accompanied by a cusped calligraphic cartouche on a ring-punched ground referring to the scene, surrounded by a wide decorative calligraphic frieze on split palmette scrolls, pairs of fish and arabesque foliate meanders inlaid on the rim, a narrow band of strapwork on the rim.
