Baya Mahieddine, known under the artistic title ‘Baya’, was an Algerian painter and ceramicist who lived and worked in Algeria and France. Baya resisted limitation to any single artistic genre, her style fusing elements of the surreal and modernist movements with traditional folk art practices. Having exhibited extensively in both Algiers and Paris in her lifetime, Baya drew attention from the likes of Picasso and André Breton. Her influence was significant in Algeria, her work even being chosen to feature on local postage stamps.
