A QAJAR POTTERY TILE OF A FALCONER ON HORSEBACK

Moulded pottery tile of rectangular shape, finely painted in black, cobalt blue, pink, turquoise, on a white ground, under a transparent glaze. Decorated with a falconer holding a bird, mounted on a white horse, stylised buildings with flowers in the background. The upper border featuring a floral frieze of polychrome-painted interlocking rosette stems on a white background. The scene evokes princely pleasures, in particular falcon hunting, a common theme in Persian iconography since the Safavid era.
Tiles like this were typically made in 19th century Tehran, the capital of the Qajar dynasty, as long, continuous bands of rectangular underglaze‑painted tiles were a common feature in the architecture of that period.

The sale brings together a remarkable collection of rare textiles, lacquerwear, woodwork, manuscripts and more. Featuring a 13th century bronze Ayyubid candlestick (lot 29), a monumental Indian silver-overlaid wooden footstool (lot 140) and an Ottoman calligraphic silk lampas panel from the inner covering of the Ka’ba (lot 166).
One further unmissable highlight is the beautifully enamelled 18 carat gold pocket watch by Breguet et Fils, produced for the Ottoman market (lot 148). We are delighted also to present further pieces from the collection of Mr Georges Antaki in this auction, which promises something of interest for all collectors interested in Islamic and Indian art.
