Huguette Caland was born in 1931, in Beirut, Lebanon. The daughter of Lebanese president Bechara El-Khoury, Caland began studying art as a mature student at the American University of Beirut. She then moved to Paris in 1970, where she gained recognition for her unique style that blended abstract art with themes of femininity and personal identity. Caland became highly influential, known for her vibrant and explicit paintings, drawings, and mixed media works, reflecting her Lebanese heritage and exploring the complexities of womanhood. Throughout her career Caland participated in numerous exhibitions worldwide, and she has been continuously celebrated since her passing in 2019 for her contributions to contemporary art.
