AN ILLUSTRATED LEAF FROM A SAFAVID SHAHNAMEH DEPICTING FARUD IN BATTLE WITH THE IRANIANS
ATTRIBUTED TO MU'IN MUSAVVIR OR HIS WORKSHOP
Safavid Iran, 17th century
Persian leaf, from the Shanameh (Book of Kings) produced on thin paper and contains 23 lines per page, written in a small, elegant nasta'liq script using black ink. It features diagonal rules in the inner margin, interlinear and intercolumnar rules highlighted in gold, and inner margins adorned with colored and golden rules. The heading is inscribed in nasta'liq script in red. The artwork is created in the style of Mu'in Musavvir or his workshop and depicts Farud engaged in battle against the Iranians.
Farud is a character in the Shahnameh (Persian Book of Kings) who, along with his mother Jerirahn, fought against the Iranian army led by Bijan and Rahham in a tragic battle, culminating in his death.

Featuring a 13th century bronze Ayyubid candlestick (lot 29), a monumental Indian silver-overlaid wooden footstool (lot 140) and an Ottoman calligraphic silk lampas panel from the inner covering of the Ka’ba (lot 166).
One further unmissable highlight is the beautifully enamelled 18 carat gold pocket watch by Breguet et Fils, produced for the Ottoman market (lot 148). We are delighted also to present further pieces from the collection of Mr Georges Antaki in this auction, which promises something of interest for all collectors interested in Islamic and Indian art.
