A CHINESE BAMBOO CARVING OF LIU HAI
Qing dynasty, late 18th century
Carved from rhizome neck of a bamboo plant as the laughing, barechested Daoist Immortal with his fringed hair parted above elongated earlobes seated on a large three-legged toad turning its large snout skywards, the surface with a dark patina.

A very similar carving is in the collection of the Denver Art Museum, bequethed by the Lutz Family, accession no 1983.526.
