Louay Kayali (1934 – 1978) was born in Aleppo, who (besides his studies the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome) lived and worked as a painter and lecturer in Demascus for much of his life. He worked closely with fellow Syrian artist Fatteh Mouddares (1922 - 1999), together representing Syria in the 1960 Venice Biennale. Kayali's death was an untimely and tragic one, from a fire in his home at the age of 44. Best known for his paintings of rich Syrian landscapes, as well as modernist portraits and paintings of flowers, Kayali is considered one of Syria’s foremost postwar and contemporary artists.
