A Guide to Bidding in Timed Online Sales

08/05/2025     General News

If you are new to bidding in timed online sales, look no further! Here is our guide to getting involved, so you don’t miss out on any pieces you’ve got your eye on.

Sammy Slabbnick, NYC Rain, £150 - £200 and Edwin Harold Glasby, Coastal Scene, £120 - £180

The sale will begin at 3pm on Tuesday May 20th. From this point until 3pm on Thursday the 5th of June, bids can be placed on items via Azca’s website and The Saleroom. Bids begin at the low estimate, and as bidding takes place, the current price of an item will be reflected as the ‘current bid’. These function as absentee bids, as there is a window at the end of the sale at which ‘live’ bidding typically takes place:

Bids begin at the low estimate, and as bidding takes place, the current price of an item will be reflected as the 'current bid'

When the timed online sale reaches its closing time, rather than the bidding ending for all lots at once at 3pm (and the highest absentee bid being automatically accepted) the lots will begin to close one after another. This begins at Lot 1 until the end of the sale, in 30 second intervals. If a lot opens and there are no bids for the initial 30 seconds, the lot will be sold to the highest absentee bid that was placed in advance online.

A Fossilised Auroch Horn, Pleistocene/ Holocene, £400 - £600 and a Liberty & Co Tudric Pewter and enamel mantel clock, £1000 - £1400

The lots will begin to close one after another. This begins at Lot 1 until the end of the sale, in 30 second intervals.

However, to allow competitive bidding between multiple interested parties, if a bid is placed in the 30 second window, the remaining time on a lot is is increased by 3 minutes. A period of 3 minutes is added each time a new bid comes in, until the highest bid is made and there are no further bids for the span of 3 minutes, at which point the lot will close.

Please be aware however that even if the bidding window is extended, after the inital 30 seconds the next lot will begin its own 30 second closing window. Thus it is possible for Lot 5 to be closing, while bidding on Lot 1 could still be taking place.

Once the highest bid is made, and there are no further bids for the span of 3 minutes, the lot will close and the process will restart

Once all lots have closed, the sale officially ends, and we will be in touch with successful buyers.

We wish bidders the best of luck with the sale!
